We teach this simple and effective technique to any health care providers and trainees. It is very easy to demonstrate the effectiveness of this simple face tent during daily patient care. Most of our anesthesia residents, CRNAs and Endoscopy/Echo Lab nurses become experts in using this face tent. They, in turn, teach their friends, medical students and other health care providers at different hospitals. Endoscopy nurses are always ready to offer the face tent for routine use or as a rescue device to anesthesiologists or other physicians. We also demonstrate the use of this face tent using abstract presentations and scientific/educational exhibits at national and international meetings. |

Even though this simple technique is very easy to use, there is
some learning curve.
- The face tent has to be secured properly to create a large reservoir
according to patient positions.
- It is important to avoid causing harm to the patient. Extra attention is
needed to prevent corneal abrasion, fire hazards and suffocation.
- This face tent also improves CO2 sampling and make early detection of
respiratory depression possible. If respiration is depressed, it is necessary
to immediately stop or decrease sedation and secure a patent airway. If
severe O2 desaturation happens, assisted ventilation with face-
mask bag or ETT should not be delayed.
- Prevention of O2 desaturation is better than rescuing a patient from
severe desaturation. Preoxygenation with this face tent goes a long way.
Most patients have no complaint by telling them: "This special mask will
give you extra oxygen. So you don't get into trouble" before applying it on
them. If the patient is still anxious, give a small amount of sedative and
then apply it.
- Try to use this face tent on every patient, even on healthy patient. If you
have time to put a nasal cannula on the patient, you have time to
put this face tent on.
